Boulder Boat Works
DC-10 Whitewater Dory
Over the last several years, Boulder Boat
Works’ Grand Canyon DC-9 whitewater dory
(read “covered-deck drift boat”) has been put
through its paces by whitewater pros in places
like the Grand Canyon flowage of the Colorado
River. In the process, Boulder Boat
Works learned a few things about how to
make an extreme-whitewater, expeditionstyle
sport dory even better, and the result
is their new DC-10 Whitewater Dory.
The DC-10 features a new, deeper hull design that
increases freeboard by five inches at the bow and three
inches at the transom to keep more water on the outside.
And what water does come over the side is quickly
exhausted by a new self-bailing system that drains water
at a rate of more than a gallon per second through five,
3-hole scuppers located on the bottom of the bow. The
five big deck hatches that provide access to the boat’s
cavernous dry storage have been redesigned from square
and rectangular to round and elliptical. The hatches are
now fitted with both hard-cover lids and neoprene spray
skirts, and when used together provide a bomb-proof,
water-tight seal. And the passenger bench seat now incorporates
a 120-quart insulated cooler box.
Like all Boulder Boat Works drift boats, the DC-10 is
built with VHMW, a super-tough, elastic, marine-grade
polymer that is 30% stronger than HDPE (high-density
polyethylene), and the toughest, lightest, lowest maintenance
hull material available today. See it online at www.

Orvis Mirage MaxKnot Tippet
Where does your tippet always break? At the leader/
tippet knot or the tippet/fly knot, of course. Barring
any abrasion damage to the leader or tippet, the weakest
points in any leader system are the knots, and the new
Mirage MaxKnot fluorocarbon tippet material from
Orvis goes a long way toward addressing that problem.
Mirage MaxKnot provides 19% to 49% higher wet
knot strength (depending upon diameter) than standard
Mirage fluorocarbon. This significant improvement is
achieved through a special double-extrusion process
that gives the outer surface more suppleness so knots
tie, seat and hold better and the tippet retains a
higher percentage of its original strength.
Mirage MaxKnot sells for $14.95
per 40-meter (131-foot) spool—a
50% price premium over standard
Mirage fluorocarbon—but with
more and bigger fish landed, it’s
a bargain in the long run. See it
