We’ve hooked-up a great prize for this issue’s contest—a
Cortland Big Sky rod, Precision XC III reel and Precision Salmon &
Steelhead line with a combined retail value of $521.90.
You can read all about Cortland’s Big Sky 4-piece, 8-weight rod
($229.95) in this issue’s “Staff Favorite Salmon & Steelhead Rods,” so
we won’t repeat ourselves here.
The reel is Cortland’s fully machined, large-arbor Precision XC III
(4-1/16” diameter, WF8F + 300 yds. 20 lb. backing, $229.95). This
2005 Editors’ Choice Award winner is even better than the original,
with an updated, sealed center-line disc drag system operated by a
1.3-inch diameter, knurled drag knob with almost 1/2 inch of relief
off the frame, that rotates through three revolutions and over 60 micro
detents lock to lock. Maximum drag force is in excess of 12 pounds,
and start-up inertia almost immeasurable.
Also included is a WF8F Precision Salmon & Steelhead floating
line ($62). Built on a braided-nylon core to stay supple in cold water,
and sporting mint green running line behind a contrasting fluorescent
green head, the WF8F’s 90-foot Rocket2 taper starts off with a 1-foot
level tip, followed by a 6-foot front taper, 7-foot body, 28-foot back
taper, and 48 feet of small-diameter running line.
