Sheboygan River
About three hours north of Chicago
and half-way up the Wisconsin shoreline
is another fishery well worth checking
out—the Sheboygan. Flowing southeast
some 70 miles from the upper reaches of
the Sheboygan River Basin, the river is fed
by several watersheds along the way, and
encounters several dams until it reaches Lake
Michigan at the port town of Sheboygan. A

wide, deep harbor at the mouth allows fish
easy access to the river and upstream reaches.
The Sheboygan River, from the town
of Koehler (famous for its namesake bathroom
fixtures and prestigious American
Club hotel) downstream past Highway
43 and to the mouth, provides some of
the best fishing this river has to offer. A
comparatively large but wadable river
throughout most of this stretch, it offers
a wide variety of fish-holding structure,
including deep bends, gravel bottom runs
and pools with tailouts, and slower moving
“frog water.” Public access is more limited
