The only thing about
Scott’s outstanding
X 2S 8-weight that has
changed since its 2007
Editors’ Choice Award
is the price: $595 then,
$650 now. X 2S blanks
are not sanded—Scott
believes that leaving the
outside “power fibers”
intact improves both
the performance and
durability of the rod—but
they do get pearly blue paint
job, plus a clear UV top
coat. The 8-weight’s action is
both decidedly fast and very
smooth. It loads nicely on a
surprisingly short line, but on
long shots the beefy mid and
butt sections kick in and keep
it throwing strong all the way
to the backing. Other features
include a pewter-anodized,
uplocking aluminum reel seat
with dual locking rings and
