Albright Tradewinds Rods
Foreign competition is putting pressure on fly-rod price points,
but Albright Tackle's Jim Murphy isn't about to roll over and play
dead. Instead, he's replacing Albright's $400 EXS Series rods with the
new Tradewinds Series-a complete line of high-modulas, fresh- and
saltwater rods. All are 4-piece models, and all are priced at $195.
Tradewinds rods are based on the same tapers as used for the EXS
Series, with the addition of new materials and a durable internal scrim.
Freshwater models (3- through 7-weight) are outfitted with hard-anodized,
uplocking aluminum reel seats with exotic wood inserts and
premium cork, half-Wells grips. Saltwater models (8- through 10weight)
have premium cork, full-Wells grips, hard-anodized, uplocking
aluminum reel seats with dual locking rings, and EVA foam/cork
fighting butts. All Tradewinds include a hard-shell tube with woodgrain
finish. See them at Booth 917, or contact Albright Tackle,

Orvis ZG Helios Rods
Orvis has dialed up the performance
and reduced the weight of their Zero
Gravity rods. The new ZG Helios Series
includes seven freshwater models, from
an 8' 4? 3-weight to a 9' 6-weight
($755; Mid Flex 6.5 to Tip Flex 10.5),
and six saltwater models spanning line
weights 6 through 10 ($775; Mid Flex
7.5 to Tip Flex 10.5). Orvis says these
new 4-piece rods are "the most powerful
casting rods? they've ever built.
The weight of ZG Helios rods is down
by 20% to 35% compared to corresponding Zero Gravity
rods-2-1/8 oz. to 2-3/8 oz. for freshwater models, and 2-7/8
oz. to 3-1/2 oz. on the saltwater side. Other new features include
solid titanium-alloy strippers with NanoLite rings (twice as hard
and 45% stronger than ceramic) and memory-metal Recoil snake
guides. See them at Booth 625, or contact The Orvis Co., Dept.

Tibor SpeedHandle Spool
Even the fast line retrieval advantage of a large arbor reel can
prove inadequate when big fish run right at you, a phenomenon
which Tibor Reel's Ted Juracsik has experienced more than once in
his fishing career. As a result, Ted has come up with an novel solution-a
whole new take on how to crank a fly reel.
The new Tibor SpeedHandle spool has not one, but two, separate
crank handles. One is of the standard type, and functions just like
any other single-action crank. The second handle-dubbed the
SpeedHandle-is mounted directly opposite (180 degrees opposed
to) the standard crank, and using it increases retrieve speed by up
to one third. SpeedHandle spools will be offered optionally on all
Tibor and Tibor QC reels and spools for 2008. See it at Booth 361,

Cortland Precision Tropic Plus Tarpon Line
The newest member of Cortland's Precision Series of speciesspecific
lines is the Tropic Plus Tarpon. If you're thinking that
there's already a Tropic Plus Tarpon line, you'd be right. The
original version, with a 15-foot clear intermediate tip, is still
offered, but the new guy is a 90-foot full floater.
We tested several prototypes of this new floater last May
while filming the bonefish segment of our upcoming video series
at Costa de Cocos Lodge in the southern Yucatan. The weather was
clear and hot. So hot, in fact, that we all agreed that we'd never fished
in hotter conditions. Through it all, however, the Tropic Plus Tarpon's 30-pound, clear-monofilament
core and super-slick coating let us punch out long, accurate casts all day long. See it at Booth 673, or

Clear Creek
Edgewood Satchel
Measuring 16? W x 11.5? H x 4.5? D, the
new Edgewood Satchel from Clear Creek will
serve you well on stream, on the boat, or on
your way to the office.
Constructed of reinforced nylon fabric
in mist gray with carbon and rust accents,
it's as rugged as it is good looking. The large
main compartment provides unobstructed
interior storage, with three interior pockets
for small items. Exterior zippered pouches
mounted on both ends can hold fly boxes,
reels, spare spools, or a whole day's worth of
junk food. Zippered front flank pockets permit ready access to leaders,
tippet spools or loop-on sink tips, while exterior mesh tippet pouches
with grommets keep your active tippet spools within easy reach.
Other features include a front-mounted hemostat holder and padded
shoulder strap. See it at Booth 319 ($65), or contact Clear Creek,
