2 Undercoat the complete head with paint
to seal the material. After this application is
dry, dip the front of the head in red paint
then place it on a rotating wheel to dry. Once
it’s dry apply a second coat if needed.
3 When the paint is dry, apply the eyes
using two different sizes of dowel. Dip the
larger dowel in yellow paint to apply the
under eyes. Once they are dry use a smaller
dowel to apply the black pupils. Again, let
the unit dry.
4 Cut a section of Mylar tubing that is
twice as long as the complete hook, slip
this material over the shank, then mount
the hook in the vise. Bind the tubing to the
head just behind the eyes using red thread.
Whip finish and trim the thread from the
hook. Trim the Mylar fibers long in front of
the thread application and break the back
part of the tubing apart to form the tail.
5 Finally, coat the rear section of the head/
tubing with epoxy or finger nail polish to
anchor the tubing to the head. Let it dry,
then use a bodkin to clean the paint out of
the hook eye remaining from step 2.
2 Tie on a segment of sparkle chenille,
wrap two turns, and tie off the material. Do
not trim it from the hook. Attach a length
of copper wire and a pink hackle feather at
the back of the hook. Leave them in place
with the chenille for a moment.
3 Prepare a set of monofilament eyes and
tie them to the hook so they extend out
the back slightly past the bend. Wrap the
thread to the front of the hook and follow
with the chenille. Tie off the chenille and
trim it from the hook.
4 Palmer the hackle over the body, tie it off
and trim the waste. Tie a clump of synthetic
hair to the front of the hook so it is long
enough to extend past the eyes at the back
of the hook. Attach several strands of Krystal
Flash (color of choice) to accent the application.
Wrap the rib material forward to anchor
the hair/Flash in place. Tie it off and trim.
5 Trim the synthetic hair front and back to
match the proportions in the photograph. Divide
the hair at the front to form a split shrimp’s
tail. Whip finish and trim off the thread.
6 Coat the hair with silicone caulk to finish
the shellback. Apply head cement to
complete the fly.
