Adam Trina from the Montana Fly Company (877-

Swisher pattern with us at a recent dealer show in Denver.
Don’t let its simplicity fool you—this is a real fish magnet.
1 Set the hook in the vise, attach the tying thread behind
the eye and cover wrap the front 1/6 of the shank. Cut two
beads from a section of bead chain and mount them to the
top of the shank using several crisscross wraps. Anchor a
piece of fine wire or tying thread to the hook while wrapping
to the back. It will be used later to form the rib.
2 Select a pink marabou feather and tie it to the hook
to form a tail as long as the shank, while wrapping
forward to meet the eyes; accent it with Flashabou if
you wish. On larger hooks, trim off the excess marabou
and tie on a second feather by its tip. On smaller
hooks, just pull the existing feather back and bind
it to the hook shank. Once the feather is bound to
the hook, wrap the thread forward to meet the eyes.
3 Twist the marabou into a rope, then wrap it forward
to meet the thread behind the eyes. Tie it off, but do not
cut off the excess feather. Wrap the thread in front of the
eyes, then pull the marabou between them, anchor it in
place, and now trim it from the hook. Palmer the wire (or
thread) forward over the body to form the rib, tie it off
and trim the waste end.
4 Turn the hook over in the vise (or rotate the vise 1/2 turn)
and tie on a pink marabou wing that is equal to the entire
hook in length. Accent it with several strands of Krystal
Flash and trim as needed. Apply a whip finish, trim off the
thread and coat the head with cement to complete the fly.

Long time friend, George Close, from Kiel, Wisconsin
sent us this simple but effective saltwater fly for our book,
the Fly Pattern Encyclopedia. It has proven its worth over
time and is a pattern-of-choice for our saltwater fly boxes.
1 Place the hook in the vise, attach the tying thread directly
behind the eye and tie a set of dumbbell eyes positioned
on the top of the shank about 1/8” behind the eye
(10 percent of the shank length is another way of making
this measurement). Tie on a clump of tan craft fur to form
a tail equal to the complete hook in length. Apply several
strands of pearl Krystal Flash to accent the tail. Leave the
thread hanging at the back of the shank.
2 Select a section of Gudebrod Braid (we used HT, but
Diamond also is fine), tie it to the hook while winding
the thread forward to the eyes, and wrap the body. Tie off
the material and clip the excess from the hook. Leave the
thread hanging in front of the eyes.
3 Turn the hook over in the vise and tie a clump of white
rabbit fur to the hook to form a wing that is slightly
longer than the shank. We like to use Zonker strips for
this purpose and leave a very short section of rabbit hide
attached to the tuft of fur to help keep it under control
while attaching it to the hook shank. Whichever method
you elect to use, tie the wing material to the hook and
trim any waste.
4 Construct the head, whip finish and trim the thread from
the hook. Coat the head with cement to complete the fly.
