Our good friends, Dave and Jan Shenk from Lancaster,
Pennsylvania, sent us this interesting fly. It’s a pattern they tie
for both fresh and saltwater fishing, but they were recently
surprised to learn Canadian bass loved it as well. Here is their
saltwater version.
1 Mount the hook in the vise and apply a thread base. It should
start about an eye width back from the front of the hook and
travel to the end of the shank. Select a clump of pink Krystal
Flash and use it to form a tail equal to the shank in length.

Bind the material to the hook while wrapping back to the front
of the shank. Do not cut off the excess; instead tie it over the
anchored tail material while wrapping back to the end of the
shank. Leave this material pointing out the back of the hook.
2 Select a grizzly hackle feather and strip the fuzzy material from
the base of the stem. Tie it to the bottom of the hook shank. Once
the feather is anchored in place, trim any waste parts of the stem.
3 Apply pink dubbing to the hook to form a body that covers the
complete thread base constructed in the first step. Palmer the hackle
forward over the body, tie if off and trim away the waste portion.
4 Pull the excess Krystal Flash over the body/hackle and anchor
it at the front of the hook. Tie off and trim the material.
Coat the Krystal Flash with nail polish to finish forming the
shellback of the shrimp.
5 Cut two black beads from a section of bead-chain and tie
them to the hook to form eyes. Apply a thread head, whip
finish and trim as needed. Coat the head with cement to
complete the fly.
