Mottled Diver
Our good friend, Steve Potter, from Tracy, California sent us this pattern he uses for
largemouth bass in the Delta near his home. He often picks up the magazine and tying
supplies at the Reel Fly Shop (209-365-7335) in nearby Lodi. The fact that Steve is a
hair-fly master is most evident when viewing this beautiful example of his work.
1 Place the hook in the vise, attach the thread to the center of the shank using
several tight wraps, and trim off the waste end. Select a six-inch rabbit strip and
tie it to the hook so about half of it sticks out the back to form a tail. Wrap the

Morton Ross from Brevard, North Carolina gets his copy of the magazine at
Davidson River Outfitters (828-877-4181) near his home. His fly really interested
us because many of the “swimming foam flies” we’ve tried in the past haven’t performed
that well. The epoxy coating and the dumbbell eyes really improve this
pattern’s swimming ability.
1 Set the hook in the vise and attach the tying thread to the shank directly behind the
eye. Bind the dumbbell weight to the underside of the hook about 1/4 of the shank length
back from the eye. Secure it with a drop or two of Krazy Glue to anchor the unit in place.
