Dan McClure from House Springs, Missouri finds FFA and his
tying materials at National Feathercraft (800-659-1707) in nearby
Saint Louis. We’ve found this simple fly is really attractive to the
bluegill in a pond not far from our house. Now don’t blink! This fly
is so easy to tie you could miss it if you don’t pay close attention.

1 Mount the hook in the vise and lay down a thread base that
starts just behind the eye, travels to the end of the shank, and
back. Select a six-inch clump of a dozen strands of Krystal Flash
and bind it to the hook with enough sticking past the end of the
shank to form a tail equal in length to the shank. Leave the bobbin
hanging at the back of the hook and the rest of the Krystal
Flash pointing forward from the eye.
2 Select a segment of black chenille and bind it to the bottom of
the shank while advancing the thread to the front of the hook. Be
sure to avoid crowding the hook eye, leaving space for a thread
head in the last step.
3 Wrap the chenille forward to meet the thread, tie it off, and
trim any excess material. Pull back the excess Krystal Flash
(that is pointing forward) to form a Trude-style wing and tie it
in place with several thread wraps. Cut the wing off even with
the end of the body.
4 Build a thread head, wrap a whip-finish, and trim. Apply a
coat of Aqua Head to complete the fly.
