The Clearwater River is famous for its “B-strain” steelhead. These
huge fish—from 12 to 22 pounds—are available all winter, but it takes
work to connect with one. Most fly fishers dredge the deep pools with
sink-tip lines and big streamers such as bunny leaches or egg sucking
leaches. The best areas are the main stem above Onofino and in the South

Fork. Idaho Fish and Game surveys reported that anglers spent 6 to 10
hours for each fish taken last year. While spending half a day to catch
one fish may seem like slow fishing to a trout angler, this is actually
quite productive by Western steelhead standards. What these fish lack
in numbers they more than make up for in bulk and pure excitement
