COLORADO
The section of the Blue River below Lake Dillon is a prime Gold
Medal trout fishery. Trout of 24 inches or more roam this water and,
although rare, trout to 10 pounds are caught here each winter. The
prime winter fishing is found where the Blue flows from the dam,

Cutthroat Anglers fly shop (888-876-8818; www.fishcolorado.com).
The principal winter food sources for these trout are mysis shrimp and
midges. Correct flies and careful presentations are a must. An overcast,
snowy day is best for a chance at the big fish, but any winter day is
good on the Blue. Trapper Rudd and the helpful folks at Cutthroat
Anglers are the resident experts, and can set you up with the right flies
and point you in the right direction. —by Paul B. Downing
