Colorado River cutthroats are a rare breed, with a native range that includes some
of the southwestern corner of Wyoming. A great place to pursue this rare and beautiful
trout is Fish Creek, which drains east off the Wyoming range into open foothills that
are typical of western cattle country—dry and rolling. In the middle of this dry country
the stream brings life. Riffles and pools are protected by willow-lined shores. Fishing is
sometimes tight, but the fish are eager and come easily to dry flies. The upper stretches
of the creek are in the National Forest, but the stretch I like best is on a private ranch.
Two Rivers Emporium (800-329-4353; www.2rivers.net) offers guided access and a
unique opportunity. They have renovated an old homesteader cabin which you can
stay in overnight. The cabin gives you a taste of what it was like in Wyoming in the
1800s. A day on the river with a Two Rivers guide is $450 for two anglers, and a twoday
package with guide and overnight stay in the cabin costs $1,150.
A great vacation can be had by trying to complete the Wyoming Cutt Slam. The state
has initiated an award for anyone who catches all four varieties of cutthroat found in the
state: Snake River and Yellowstone, as well as Colorado River and Bonneville. The latter
cutts are found only in the extreme southwest section of the state. Two Rivers Emporium
specializes in guiding people to their Cutt Slam Award. by Paul B. Downing
