LOUISIANA
• Venice
• Captian Bobby Warren
During almost four decades of living in the lower Mississippi
River Delta, I watched the area grow from a remote honey-hole
for mostly local anglers to what is possibly the most well-known
venue on the Gulf Coast. And the fishing for several popular species
remains as good as it gets anywhere—possibly better!
Venice is the hub of this angling Mecca. Lying some 70 miles
southeast of New Orleans at the end of LA. 23, it is surrounded
by waters teeming with red drum, spotted seatrout, and southern
flounder. With the exception of the coldest times of winter, these
fish can provide superb year-round action. Sight-fishing for reds in
shallow marshy areas can be outstanding. Spoon flies are popular
year-round choices. Blind casting big poppers across oyster beds
and sandbars can produce “specks” of trophy proportions during
spring, and the “fish of the day” otherwise. Lightly weighted
Clouser minnows worked across the mouths of small shallow tidal
cuts can result in the main ingredients for many fried flounder
dinners. And all of those possibilities literally surround Venice.
Captain Bobby Warren runs charter trips out of Venice on
his fly-fishing friendly boat. He is a long-time friend and fishing
companion with a fly-fishing clientele that is large for the
area. Bobby can be reached at (504) 382-8063, or via e-mail
at bobbypop5@cox.net. Log on to the Venice Marina website
at www.venicemarina.com for a list of its full services, which
include accommodations and a restaurant. by Pete Cooper, Jr.
