IDAHO
• South Fork Snake River
• World Cast Anglers
The high bluffs and rocky buttes that cradle the scenic South Fork of the Snake River in Idaho are indeed majestic, but it’s the Yellowstone cutthroat trout that take
top billing here. Surface strikes will get your adrenaline rushing as fat cutthroat (and a healthy population of browns and rainbows) crash big terrestrials during the
summer. But great fishing is available beyond June and July: I fished the South Fork in mid September, and though the conditions weren’t optimal, I easily landed two
dozen cutts. Most were about 16 inches, but several were much bigger. And more impressive than their looks was their fight: I lost one that would easily have surpassed
24 inches when my tippet broke!
Guide Jim Hickey of World Cast Anglers fishes the South Fork Snake regularly and knows it well. Chosen as the 2004 Orvis Endorsed Outfitter
of the Year, their staff of 18 topnotch guides provide outstanding fishing. They offer float trips as well as overnight forays from late May into early October.
Centrally located in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, their clients may fish the Green, Salt, and New Fork Rivers as well as the Snake, and take a swing
into Yellowstone National Park on the same trip. Two words of advice: First, book early (this is a popular stretch of water); second, pack extra tippet. Fullday
float trips for two begin at $435. For more information see www.worldcastanglers.com, or call Jim Hickey at (800) 654-0676. by Beau Beasley
