ONTARIO

At 600 miles long, the Albany River is the longest river in Ontario, flowing from Lake St. Joseph six-hundred miles east to James Bay, with many
lake-like sections along the way. It is a prolific trophy fishery for a number of gamefish species. Last season I made two trips to Miminiska Lodge on
Miminiska Lake, part of the Albany system. This region is known for trophy walleye and northern pike in Miminiska Lake and in the Albany River.
As an added bonus, a number of smaller Albany tributaries teaming with trophy brook trout are accessible by float plane from the lodge. I did a total
of three day-long floats on these brook trout tributaries to “test the waters” this summer. A float plane takes you and a companion, along with a guide,
canoe and your gear into a drop-off point, and the day is spent paddling from one hot brookie pool to another. I took my Dad along on such a float
and had the trip of a lifetime with over a dozen trophy brookies at or above the 20-inch mark.
Miminiska Lodge boasts premium accommodations and spectacular food in cozy log buildings. The lodge even has its own grass air strip. Miminiska
is accessible by commercial carrier or float plane from Thunder Bay, Ontario. A typical 5-day (4-night) trip runs about $2,400 (including the flight
from Thunder Bay). Day-long float-plane trips cost a moderate $250 extra. I highly recommend at least one float-plane excursion during your stay.
