record (page 1) and 25-pound junior world record (left) were
released this past year. Arctic char live 75+ years, and 10- to
15-pound fish are the norm here. These incredibly hardfighting
fish also take dry flies. Sea run brookies are occasionally
caught; a short distance fly-out to Char Lake produces
brook trout in the 2- to 5-pound range on virtually every cast.
The Lodge is located 12 miles from the coast, where salmonids
first stop on their journey from the sea. Owner Jim
Burton lands his float plane in front of the lodge with its 16
miles of pools and runs. Accommodations are superb. The
season runs from July 22 to September 15, and is limited to
10 rods per week. Rates are all-inclusive (except for alcoholic
beverages and guide tips) from Goose Bay at $4,995 per week.

brook trout, and Arctic grayling. Owned and operated for
generations by the Webber family, this is a truly exclusive
and first-class operation with a long history of satisfied
customers. To preserve the fishing and trophy potential, the
lodge limits bookings to 16 guests at a time, and has a long
standing policy of barbless-hook, catch-and-release fishing
only. Experienced local guaides accompany all fishermen
on North Knife Lake, and on fly outs to other nearby but
virtually unexplored rivers and lakes. Travel to and from
the lodge is an all-day affair requiring an overnight stay in
Thompson, best accomplished using regional airlines via a
connection in Winnipeg. For more information and current
rates, contact North Knife Lake Lodge at (888) 932-2377;

lodges are strategically located at the inlet
of the Salmon River at Southwest Pond.
Guests can test their skills on the king of sport fish, the
Atlantic salmon (late June through early September). The
Salmon River’s Atlantics number 10,000 to 12,000 fish each
year, and average four to six pounds—with nine to twelve
hook-ups per angler per day—but the number of 8- to 10pounders
caught and released is growing every season. The
river’s brook trout and char average two to three pounds, with
the latter being unique in that they do not migrate to saltwater.
One week fishing packages are priced at $2,600 U.S.,
including airport transfers, accommodations, meals, boats,
canoes, guides (two anglers per guide), truck transportation
to fishing pools, and pack out lunches. Fishing licenses cost
$95 per angler, or $135 per family. by Dudley Hall
are simply unthinkable to the average angler: Several world
records have been set here, but perhaps the most impressive
fish to date is the lake trout that weighed in at just over 78
pounds. That is not a typo: 78 pounds.
Lake trout aren’t your cup of tea? No problem. Go for
grayling, arctic char, pike, and even walleye. The fishing is
so good here that Field and Stream rated Plummer’s Arctic
Lodges the #1 fishing lodge for 2007. Plummer’s operates five
lodges including the Great Bear Lake facility; packages begin
at $2,595 for three days and top out at $4,995 for a week’s
stay. For more information, visit their website to orient yourself:

NOVA SCOTIA
• Margaree River
• Margaree Lodge
Located on the northwest
shore of Cape Breton Island
(the eastern end of Nova Scotia), Margaree Lodge is
situated right on the famed Margaree River at Margaree
Forks. The Margaree is one of the most beautiful Atlantic
salmon rivers in the Canadian Maritimes, and has been
designated a Canadian Heritage River (similar to our
“Wild and Scenic” designation).
Salmon season on the Margaree runs from June 1
through the end of October. All told, there are more
than 25 miles of fishable water with over 60 wadeable
pools (no boats required). The Forks, Dollar, Seal, Snag,
Etheridge, Wash and Swimming Hole pools are all within
10 minutes of the Lodge. The Margaree’s Atlantics are
numerous but not particularly large (10 to 20 pound
average), but there’s always the chance of meeting and
beating the Margaree’s 52-pound record.
The lodge is really a hotel, with all the amenities you’d
expect, including a 4-star restaurant, pool and spa. A
variety of all-inclusive fishing packages are offered. The
6-day package—priced at a remarkable $1,039 Canadian
double occupancy—includes six nights accommodations,
all meals, three days of guided fishing (plus three days
self guided), licenses and a dozen complimentary flies.
Additional guided days can be arranged at additional cost.
The 2-day package ($484 Canadian double occupancy)
gets you two nights accommodations, all meals, two days
of guided fishing, licenses and a six-pack of complimentary
flies. For more information, contact Margaree Lodge
