ALBERTA
The Livingstone River flows between the Canadian Rockies
and the Livingstone mountain range in southwest Alberta
and eventually drains into the Oldman River. Gerry Oatway
operates Flycasters, a guide service that provides wilderness fly
angling for trophy cutthroats and bull trout to a limited clientele.
Gerry operates a camp near the Livingstone River in this
wilderness region of Alberta. The trout here have rebounded
successfully after extensive flooding ten years ago prompted
the Alberta government to close these rivers to angling for
a period of time. Now you can successfully hook 10 to 15
cutthroats during the evening hatch, with some fish in excess
of 20 inches, and the largest in the 24-inch class.
Like all “cutties,” the Livingstone fish love dry flies, and in
this crystal clear stream it’s a dream to cast to a rising pod of
cutthroats. Gerry holds the bull trout record on the Livingstone,
a gargantuan 36-inch fish that actually ate a 14-inch
cutthroat that Gerry had hooked on a dry. All bull trout are
protected in Alberta, and these magnificent mountain char
are making a real comeback. The Livingstone River is an
easily manageable walk-and-wade stream. The Oldman River
and other mountain lakes and streams are accessible from the
Flycasters’ camp. The operation is situated 30 miles north
of Coleman, southwest of Calgary. Rates begin at $250 per
person per day. Bed and breakfast, and full meal and accommodation
packages are available on request. Contact Gerry
