• The Reel Baja
Cortez side of the Baja
Peninsula, down toward the
pointy end an hour north
of Cabo San Lucas, The Reel Baja at Rancho
Leonero Resort is the Real Deal.
The Sea of Cortez in the East Cape
region of Baja Sur offers more than 850
species of fish, but those of particular interest
to fly anglers include roosterfish, Baja
dorado, sierra mackerel, striped marlin,
blue marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, wahoo,
jack crevalle, pompano, ladyfish, pargo and
bonito. The typically balmy weather and
flat seas, combined with the spectacular
green and blue waters, white sand beaches
and majestic desert landscape of Baja Sur,
make The Reel Baja truly unique among
Mexican destinations. I’ve fished Mexico
more times than I can remember, but I’ve
never seen anything like this.
U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS
• Torrecilla & San Jose Lagoons
• Caribbean Outfitters
When someone mentions San Juan, images
of beach-front casinos and giant caribbean
lobsters come to mind . . . followed immediately
by the memory of a twin-engine
Bomba Air flight from Tortola to San Juan
and Capt. Rasta-man’s kamikazee-style landing
in a thunderstorm that nearly killed me
(from a heart failure, not a crash). But I don’t
think of fishing.
Too bad, because there’s some incredible
tarpon fishing in the Torrecilla and San
Jose lagoons—the largest estuary on the
island—just minutes from downtown San
Juan. Caribbean Outfitters (787-396-8346;

half- and full-day fly-fishing trips with Capt.

• Arawak Expeditions
The best thing about fishing in the Virgins
is that you pretty much have the place to
yourself. It’s not “the bonefish capital of the
world,” but there is no shortage of bones available—some
of prodigious size—especially
around St. John, the most picturesque island
of the lot, and home to the Virgin Islands National
Park. Throw in plenty of snook, jacks,
sharks, barracuda and tarpon (lots of 30 to 60
pounders, and the occasional 100 pounder),
combined with sea kayaking, SCUBA diving
and mountain biking, and what you get is
Arawak Expeditions.
Arawak gives you the ability to write your
own ticket—mix in as much fishing as you
like with other outdoor activities to create the
