Mexico’s Ascension Bay south of Cancun
on the Yucatan Peninsula is a fish-producing
factory loaded with bonefish, permit, snook,
tarpon, barracuda and jacks. The Bay lies within
the 1.3 million acre Si’an Kaan Biosphere
Reserve, a diverse tract of water, marshes, and
forests protected by from exploitation and
development.
If you hold your left hand in the shape of
a “C” you have mimicked the geography of
Ascension Bay. At the tip of your thumb lies
Punta Pujaras and Casa Blanca Lodge (CBL).
After landing in Cancun, CBL flies you to
their private airstrip, then a short boat ride
brings you to their pier and complimentary
margaritas. The next time you see your luggage
will be in your room.
The excellent guides are mostly of Mayan
descent and they know the waters well. All
rooms have air conditioning, toilets and
showers, and the food and drink are plentiful
and good. The snook and the conch ceviche
appetizers are absolutely wonderful.
Bring along a 7- to 10-weight rods with
floating bonefish lines. The usual lineup of
Gotchas, Crazy Charlies, Clousers (in tan &
white), and Snapping Shrimps take care of
bonefish. Good crab patterns in sizes 2 to 6,
such as McCrabs and Del’s Merkins, work on
the permit. Take an afternoon to visit the stunning
Maya ruins at Chac Mool and the interesting
ruin—accessible only by canoe or kayak—
at Tupac. For more information, or to book a
