NICARAGUA
• San Juan River
• San Carlos Sportfishing
The world’s best fly fishing for giant tarpon is in Nicaragua’s San Juan River,
below 3,100-square-mile Lake Nicaragua. When civil war came to Nicaragua in
the 1970s, the fishing lodges closed. Now, after more than a decade of peace and
tranquility, Philippe Tisseaux has built a small lodge at the lake’s outflow, the San
Juan River, which flows east to the Caribbean. The San Juan teems with tarpon to
over 250 pounds, and common snook to 50 pounds. Exotic species—like rainbow
bass and guapote—are also abundant in the lake.
Today’s Nicaragua is truly fantastic. It has survived civil war, incredibly destructive
earthquakes and hurricanes. Its hard working people have created a new,
independent, and peaceful society. And it doesn’t hurt that Nicaragua has such
fabulous natural resources. Along with neighboring Costa Rica, Nicaragua boasts
the richest ecosystem on earth: coastlines on the Pacific and Caribbean, great hardwood
forests, mighty rivers, countless waterfalls, incredible flora, unparalleled bird
and animal diversity. Nicaragua’s rich culture includes fascinating pre-Columbian
ruins, conquistadors, and pirates like Capt. Morgan. The Spaniards shipped Aztec
and Incan gold eastward across Lake Nicaragua and down the San Juan to Fortress
Castillo, where California-bound Forty-Niners traveled west to gain other gold.
This world-class fishery has remained dormant until recently, and is truly a “must
do” trip. Rates for this jungle-fishing experience start at just $2,225/person/week,
including airport pick-up in Managua or San Jose. Fore more information, visit the
