BAHAMAS
COSTA RICA
• Andros Island
• Mt. Pleasant Lodge
CAYMAN ISLANDS
Situated on Andros Island—the largest and
least populated island in the Bahamas—Mt.
Pleasant Lodge lies smack in the middle of the
bonefishing capital of the world. Fishing can be
as simple as “do-it-yourself” wading on White Bight, one of the most beautiful
beaches in the Bahamas, or on over ten miles of white sand flats. If you prefer a
guide, Glister Wallace, Wellington Mackey, Tommy Key, and Nell Scavella (the
Bahamas first certified female guide) are at your disposal. And be sure to bring
some poppers and wire bite tippet for the big barracuda that inhabit the flats
right outside the lodge.
This family-run lodge, with comfortable duplex cottages and home cooked
meals, offers an economical and secluded retreat for the die hard bonehead.
Each cottage has a veranda overlooking the Oceanside flats, kitchenette, private
bathroom, two air-conditioned bedrooms with double and single beds, and an
open living room with ceiling fans and large windows to take advantage of the
trade winds. Breakfast and dinner are served in the lodge’s main dining room,
and after a long (and usually hot) day fishing, anglers can enjoy a drink (or two)
at the small bar or on the beach.
Rates run from $800 (4 nights/3 days) to $1,400 (7 nights/6 days) for a selfguided
stay. Guided fishing costs an additional $75 (wading) to $200 (flats boat)
per angler per day. For more details, log on to www.yellowdogflyfishing.com, or

• Barra Del Colorado Wildlife Refuge
• Silver King Lodge
For almost 20 years
Costa Rica’s Caribbean
Silver King Lodge has redefined
the experience of
fly fishing for giant tarpon and record-shattering snook in the Barra del Colorado
Wildlife Refuge. The fishing is better than ever, and the fish even larger now
that they are protected. The luxurious accommodations, facilities, equipment
and guides set Silver King Lodge apart. Large, new boats and motors capable
of running offshore are standard. The lodge is beautiful, with a tackle shop, air
conditioned private rooms, well-stocked bar, succulent cuisine, and a spa featuring
a pool, Jacuzzi and masseuse—a vast improvement over the “good old days.”
Silver King Lodge offers, arguably, the world’s best fishing for giant tarpon
and common snook. Tarpon over 200 pounds are becoming more common, and
numerous snook records have been set here. Jack crevalle, cubera and many other
species are common. Offshore fishing for sails, wahoo, tuna, and dorado is available,
and well as backcountry fishing in lagoons and tributaries for hard-fighting
manchaca, mojarra and guapote. And the guides here are simply the best.
All-inclusive rates vary by season, and start at $1,875/person for three days of
guided fishing, plus $325 for each additional day. Contact Silver King Lodge at

• Little Cayman Island
• Southern Cross Club
If you dream of escaping
to a tropical paradise that
offers peace and relaxation
along with world-class fish-
ing and diving, few places can compare with the Cayman Islands. About 400
miles south of Miami, and just 10 square miles in size, Little Cayman Island is
one of the least developed, most accessible islands in the Caribbean. In addition to
seclusion, its main attraction is diversity of sport fish available to the angler. Little
Cayman’s ecosystem is rich, offering both miles of unspoiled flats and blue-water
challenges in the Cayman Trench, just 1/4 mile offshore. Bonefish are found on
the flats year ‘round, and the permit fishing in the spring and fall is excellent.
One of Little Cayman’s jewels is the Southern Cross Club (800-899-2582;
www.southerncrossclub.com), the oldest resort and the only full-service fishing
facility on the island. Head guide, Carlos Moore, is the man to see for a
Cayman Flats Slam of bonefish, permit, and tarpon, or to target marlin, tuna,
and wahoo offshore. He will also introduce you to the very-smart, very-challenging,
landlocked 30- 50-pound tarpon in Little Cayman’s small inland lake.
Eight-weight outfits with weight-forward floating lines and lots of backing are
what you’ll need. Sight fishing and wading right in front of the club is excellent.
All-inclusive rates for a 5-night package start at $1,960. by Dudley Hall
