these oceanside and lagoon bonefish. Leaders from 9 to 12 feet will usually suffice,
but you may want to go longer if the wind lies down and the fish appear spooky.
Few places in Central America offer better chances at the elusive permit. The
inner lagoon has a huge population of permit, and they often run in large schools.
Oceanside permit tend to be much larger, often pushing the forty-pound mark.
These broadsided, black-sickled brutes are best handled on 10-weight rods and 10-
to 12-foot leaders. No fish has contributed to more divorces than the permit, and an
obsession with permit can lead to a disease known as “black-sickle anemia”.
Tarpon round out the “Grand Slam” potential at Turneffe Flats. Although the
big, bruiser tarpon are migratory (showing up in April or May and lasting through
August or September), there are plenty of residents in the channels and lagoons
year round. Migratory tarpon require 11- or 12-weight rods and quality reels with
at least 250 yards of backing.
Turneffe Flats also offers scuba diving, kayaking, eco-touring and a host of other
activities for the angler and non-angler alike. The diversity of this unique and ancient
fishing ground is unrivaled, and if all of this doesn’t peak your interest, it might be
time to see your doctor. For more information, contact Sporting Life Travel online
